Residents in South Leeds are being invited to take part in a free, five day, film making course, which starts at BITMOs GATE in Belle Isle on Tuesday (12 May 2015).
The video course is being run by Amplify Leeds a new group which is looking for ways to address inequality in Leeds. The project is supported by The Young Foundation, Leeds City Council and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The film-making workshops are run in partnership with Insight Share.

- Wednesday 13 May: Community Mapping and filming
- Thursday 14 May: Reflections, improving techniques and storyboarding
- Wednesday 20 May: Logging and editing
- Thursday 21 May: Evaluation, action planning and community screening
What is Participatory Video?
Filmmaking is an easy and accessible way of bringing people together to explore issues, voice concerns or simply to be creative and tell stories. In these workshops you will learn all the technical skills required to make a film, and work together to create an original short film about life in Leeds.
We hope to provide an empowering experience, that will enabling a group or community to take action and communicate their needs and ideas to decision-makers and/or their wider networks.
- Participants rapidly learn video skills through games & exercises.
- Facilitators help groups identify & analyse their important issues
- Short videos & messages are directed & filmed by participants.
- Footage is shared with the wider community at screening events.
- A dynamic process of community-led learning & exchange is set in motion.
- Communities always have full editorial control.

Because we are running three blocks of workshops over the year, participants will also be invited to a larger screening event in late June. This event will bring together the filmmakers, key decision makers and community leaders; in order to give the issues you present and explore in film, a platform to be heard!
