ASDA, Morley will be the location of the first supermarket collection of food for the South Leeds Foodbank on Saturday, August 3rd, 2013. Will you be there?
Beeston Festival ’13 was indeed a hive of activity and I spent a few moments with some of the people that are leading on championing one of the many worthy causes in our community – the South Leeds Foodbank. Work is under way and every little helps.
I spoke to Helen Ingleby and she has the following appeal to the people of South Leeds:
“We need lots of volunteers to spare an hour or two on Saturday 3rd August, the first supermarket collection of food for South Leeds Foodbank will take place at Asda in Morley. We’ll stand in the entrance with lists of the kind of food we require (tinned and dried) and will ask shoppers to buy an item to donate to us.
“We need to collect around two tons of food before we can open. The food will be taken to our storeroom in Middleton Methodist Church to be sorted and bagged up, then it will be distributed from the Belle Isle Family Centre, under St John and St Barnabas Church. We will serve only people in crisis who come with vouchers that have been given to them by selected front-line agencies who know of their need (e.g. school and children centre support staff, social work or housing staff, clergy).”
Churches, schools and businesses can help us to gather food by placing a collecting box on their premises into which people can donate tins and packets.
Contact the Foodbank to receive a poster to attach to the collecting box and a list of the foods they need. Collect the food, if possible deliver it to the storeroom on a Tuesday morning, or telephone to arrange a delivery/collection time.

So folks, if we can, let us do our bit towards collecting the approximately two tons of food. That sounds like a lot but together we can do it!
