What’s On Roundup 8-14 February 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week at Elland Road where Leeds United are at home to Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday, kicking off at 12:15pm. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after the match.

Saturday night sees family-friendly Wrestling at The Holbeck club, Jenkinson Lawn, LS11 9QX. Take To The Skies runs from 6-9:30pm.

St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, Beeston Hill, LS11 8PD are serving up their monthly family breakfast at 9:30am, you can stay for morning worship at 10:30am, but you’re not obliged to.

Sunday also sees the monthly Farmers Market running from 10am-4pm with lots of good food straight from the producers, at Armouries Square, Leeds Dock, LS10 1LT.

Hunslet RLFC entertain Huddersfield Giants of the Super League in the Challenge Cup on Sunday afternoon. Kick off is at 3pm at South Leeds Stadium, Middleton Grove, LS11 5DJ. Tickets from hunsletrlfc.com, kids under 16 go free.

A Family Service will be held at Cottingley Community Centre, LS11 0HJ on Sunday afternoon, 4-5pm.

The South Leeds Community Kitchen will be cooking up a free meal on Sunday, 4-5:45pm, at Beeston Parish Centre (St Mary’s), Town Street, LS11 8PN.

Also on Sunday the Leeds Knights take on the Milton Keynes Lightning. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road.

There are a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, 10am-12pm and outside St Matthew’s Community Centre on Holbeck Moor Road from 10:30am-12pm. Finally they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street on Thursday 10am-12pm.

The support group for women going through the menopause holds its monthly drop-in session on Tuesday evening, 7-8pm at Hamara Healthy Living Centre, Tempest Road, Beeston, LS11 6RD. Women can receive information, support, some freebies, and the chance to make new friends in a safe and confidential supportive environment. Refreshments will be provided.

Free women’s self defence classes start on Wednesday, 10-11am at the Hamara Centre on Tempest Road, LS11 6RD. Places are limited so please book by contacting aliya.panjwani@hamara.co.uk or call 0113 277 3330.

Trinity Network are holding a Valentine’s Tea Dance on Wednesday, 11am-3pm at their base at United Reformed Church, Nesfield Road, Belle Isle, LS10 3LG.

There’s a meeting on Wednesday evening to discuss launching a Repair Café in Beeston. People who might want to help run the events and people who can fix things are especially welcome. It takes place at the St Luke’s CARES shop, 246 Dewsbury Road, LS11 6JQ on Wednesday from 6-7pm.

On Thursday Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library (LS11 6PF) are holding two Pick & Mix workshop taster sessions, 10am-12pm and 1-3pm, covering crafts, cooking, games, mindfulness and gardening.

And finally, Hunslet Tenants & Residents Association (TARA) will be meeting on Friday evening, 6-7:30pm at Involve Community Centre, Whitfield Avenue, LS10 2QE. This will be a listening event where you can discuss the issues that matter to you with your councillors.
