
Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week in Beeston where Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club’s First XI play Spen Victoria CC on Saturday at 12pm. The home fixture is at their ground on Gipsy Lane, opposite Cockburn School, LS11 5TT.
There’s a Community Jumble Sale at Hillside, Beeston Road, LS11 8ND on Saturday afternoon, 1-4pm. Bargains galore including clothes, books, games, puzzles, homeware and kitchen items.
On Saturday afternoon, 1:30-5:30pm Julie Gill will be leading an afternoon retreat ‘Resetting Your Nervous System’ at DAZL HQ in Middleton (LS10 4JQ). The retreat includes various workshops to reduce stress and anxiety and foster community connection with like-minded people. £10 paid after the retreat ends. Hunslet ARLFC are holding a charity Race Night to raise funds for the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund on Saturday evening. At the Hunslet Club Sports Village (LS10 2AT) from 7pm.
Bus Stop Goths is the latest touring show at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck. Fantasy meets punk with a Teesside twist in a joyfully chaotic celebration of youth expression and identity. The Still Sunday Yoga Session takes place at St Matthew’s community centre in Holbeck (LS11 9NR) from 10-11am. The gentle yoga session will include breathing techniques, guided meditation, gentle movements and relaxation. It’s brought to you by Holbeck Together and Being You Leeds. Beeston in Bloom are holding one of their popular Plant Sales on Sunday 10-12pm at the Watsonian Pavilion in Cross Flatts Park.
Bhangra classes for men start on Monday evening at Beeston Village Community Centre LS11 8DQ. No experience needed, just bring your energy. Call 07762 163255 to book your place on the fortnightlly sessions.
There are a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library. Then on Thursday they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street.
Support, rest and relaxation are on offer to survivors of domestic abuse on Tuesday at this month’s Survivor-led Sisterhood meeting. St George’s Centre, Middleton, 11am-1:20pm.
We will be hosting online local election Hustings Meetings for Hunslet & Riverside ward (Tuesday), Middleton Park ward (Wednesday) and Beeston & Holbeck ward (Thursday). Each meeting will start at 7pm and is a chance to put your questions to the candidates. Click here for joining instructions.
A Councillor advice surgery will be held at Middleton Elderly Aid’s Social Centre on Acre Road on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30am.
Hunslet Remembered is a chance to reminisce and discuss local history on Thursday from 10am-12pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS.
The Salvation Army hold their monthly Friendship Lunch on Thursday, 11am-1pm at their base on Hunslet Hall Road, LS11 6QB. It’s a warm space with chat and games etc plus a free snack lunch.
Opera North return to the Penny Hill Shopping Centre in Hunslet for another monthly recital on Thursday. Sarah Masters (clarinet) and Jenny Hobbins (piano) will be bringing a delightful mix of classical and opera highlights and popular, well-known tunes to the centre. Come along and listen between 12:15-12:45pm. Just beyond the Morrisons tills in the shopping centre.
Middleton Elderly Aid host their monthly free legal advice drop-in on Friday morning from 9:30-11:30am at their Social Centre on Acre Road, LS10 4LF.
Girls aged 8-11 who are interested in trying a new sport are encouraged to get down to Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club in Beeston where they can try soft ball cricket on Friday, 6-7pm. The new sessions will run weekly through May and June.
Leeds United’s match against Burnley in the Premiership has been moved to Friday night, kicking off at 8pm. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after the match.
And finally, we will be distributing our May newspaper to 200 pick up points around LS10 and LS11 from Wednesday onwards so watch out for a copy.
