What’s On Roundup 25-31 January 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week with rugby league Betfred Challenge Cup action on Saturday. Hunslet ARLFC take on West Hull at The Oval (opposite Morrisons) with the winners set to host St Helens from the Super League in the next round. Meanwhile their semi-professional neighbours Hunslet RLFC are away to Lock Lane in Castleford. Both ties kick off at 2pm.

Semi-professional South Leeds FC play Selby Town FC on Saturday at South Leeds Stadium, Middleton Grove, LS11 5DJ. The match kicks off at 3pm.

St Luke’s Church in Beeston are hosting a family friendly Film Night from 4:30pm on Saturday. Entry is free and you can buy hot dogs and drinks before the film starts. St Luke’s Church is on Malvern Road, LS11 8PD.

St Andrew’s Pantomime Group‘s production of Babes In The Wood continues this week with shows on Saturday 2pm and 7pm; Sunday 2pm; Tuesday 7pm; Thursday 7pm and Friday 7pm. The show closes next Saturday (1 February) with performances at 2pm and 7pm. Book tickets on 07988 349985 or email: standrewspantogroup@hotmail.com.

Also on Saturday the Leeds Knights take on the Peterborough Phantoms. The ice hockey match faces off at 6:30pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road.

On Monday evening Beeston Hill Community Association will be meeting at the Hamara Centre on Tempest Road (LS11 6RD) from 6:30pm. The main item under discussion will be the plans to change the junction between Tempest Road and Dewsbury Road.

Leeds City Council’s Employment & Skills team are holding a drop-in Build Your Community event on Tuesday, 2-6pm at Hillside, Beeston Road, LS11 8ND. You’ll find information about getting involved in your community; employment, apprenticeship and training advice; money management; health and wellbeing; and much more.

The Leeds Women’s Centre is holding a pop up event on Tuesday, 4-8pm at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck, Crosby Street, LS11 9RQ. The day includes fitness, craft, yoga and upcycling workshops as well as advice on money matters and building confidence for employment; and food will be served all day.

Find out about Juniper Training’s Pre Apprenticeship Programmes for young people aged are 16-18 years old at their open days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10am-2pm. At Unit 4, Meadow Court, Millshaw, LS11 8LZ. Contact lisa.hartley@junipertraining.co.uk, 07821 644328.

A new weekly women’s group starts at Belle Isle TMO’s GATE centre, Aberfield Gate, LS10 3QH on Wednesday, 6-7:30pm. Restoring Hope Women’s Group is a mental health peer support group providing a safe space to come and chat.

Hunslet Remembered is a chance to reminisce and discuss local history on Thursday from 10am-12pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS.

There is a Police Contact Point at Cottingley Community Centre on Friday, 10am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.

On Friday residents of Beeston & Holbeck ward can meet their Councillors at the monthly surgeries: 4pm at Beeston Library on Town Street; 5pm at St Matthew’s Community Centre in Holbeck; and 6pm at Cottingley Community Centre.

And finally, we will be distributing our December newspaper to 200 pick up points around LS10 and LS11 from Wednesday onwards so watch out for a copy.
