What’s On Roundup 18-24 January 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week in Beeston, where Aspiring Communities are opening their doors to the local community on Saturday from 12-3pm. There will be tours of the building, a chance to meet the team and enjoy refreshments.

If you’ve ever fancied having a go at American Football, Yorkshire Academy Rams American Football are running an open training session this upcoming Saturday 18th January at Middleton Leisure centre, 12:00-14:00. The session is free to attend. You will require boots for an all-weather pitch and a gum shield to take part, and bringing water is recommended

The Belle Isle Repair Cafe is back at BITMO’s Gate on Saturday, 1-4pm. Bring your broken things and let the fixers work their magic. You can also grab a free winter coat and a warm toastie. At 3pm they will be planning and chatting about this year’s Belle Isle Gala, a chance to find out how you can get involved on the day.

It’s opening night on Saturday for St Andrew’s Pantomime Group‘s production of Babes In The Wood … oh yes it is!

On Sunday morning South Leeds Lakers are hosting a cross country race in Middleton Park, so watch out for runners between 10am-12pm. The race is important to club as the income enables them to keep their activities free and accessable, including the Junior Lakers sessions at South Leeds Stadium.

Leeds United have two home games this week. On Sunday they entertain Sheffield Wednesday, kicking off at 12pm. Then on Wednesday evening they face Norwich City with a 7:45pm kick off. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after each match.

Also on Sunday the Leeds Knights take on the Berkshire Bees. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice further along Elland Road.

The Library Story Bus will be pulling in to BITMO’s GATE for Story & Rhyme Time on Tuesday 10:30am-12pm. BITMOs GATE is on Aberfield Gate, off Belle Isle Road, LS10 3QH.

There are a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, 10am-12pm and outside St Matthew’s Community Centre on Holbeck Moor Road from 10:30am-12pm. Finally they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street on Thursday 10am-12pm.

On Tuesday evening residents of the Garnets & Oakleys in Beeston are invited to a Your Voice – Your Community meeting to discuss issues in the area with councillors and council officers. The meeting is being held at St Luke’s CARES charity shop at 246 Dewsbury Road, LS11 6JQ from 6-7:30pm.

MHA South Leeds are hosting a social afternoon at the Tommy Wass pub on Wednesday afternoon from 3pm. There will be live entertainment, quizzes, bingo and food. Contact 0113 271 6201 or southleeds@mha.org.uk for tickets.

And finally,  The Leeds Women’s Centre is holding a pop up event on Thursday, 10am-2pm at Tenants Hall  Enterprise Centre, Acre Close, LS10 4HX. The day includes fitness, craft, yoga and upcycling workshops as well as advice on money matters and building confidence for employment; and food will be served all day.
