What’s On Roundup 14-20 September 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start on Saturday morning with the Middleton Makers Market, 10am-2pm, at Middleton Park Circus. Lots of lovely handmade items including clothing, jewelery, soaps and food; all made by local people.

Leeds Dads will be holding another free Soft Play session, 10am-12pm on Sunday morning at Little Angels behind the Tommy Wass pub, LS11 7HL. This for dads and pre-school children and there’s free tea and toast! Book: leedsdads.org/events

There are three Heritage Open Days events in Beeston on Saturday. You are invited to discoverthe past and present of Cross Flatts Park between 10am-3pm with guided tours at 10:30am, 12pm and 1:30pm, plus a plant sale at the Watsonian Pavilion. Then there are two linked events making faith connections at Jamia Masjid Abu (mosque) on Catherine Grove from 10am-12pm and then the GNNSJ Gurudwara (Sikh temple) on Lady Pit Lane from 11am-1pm. These are a great opportunity to find out more about these two important religions.

Rowland Road Social Club in Beeston Hill is hosting a Craft and Car Boot Sale on Saturday from 12-4pm. As well as all the bargains – food, plants, jewellery, knits – the will be lots of hands on activities for children.

Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club’s Second XI take on Ossett CC on Saturday at Gipsy Lane, LS11 5TT starting at 12pm. Then on Sunday the Under 15 XI play Birstall CC after last week’s game was rained off. The match starts at 2pm.

Saturday also sees Leeds United entertain Burnley at Elland Road in the Championship. Kick-off is at 12:30pm and you can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley.

Fearns is set to host this year’s annual Leeds Rum Festival on Saturday. From 1-9pm, the Leeds Dock kitchen, bar and event space located at 4 The Boulevard, will be home to infectious music and immersive masterclasses hosted by rum ambassadors, with plenty of opportunities to taste great food and sip on the finest rums. Also on Saturday afternoon Hunslet ARLFC entertain Wath Brow Hornets in the Conference Premier Division Championship Play-off at The Oval, opposite Morrisons. Kick off is at 2:30pm.

The fun fair is on Holbeck Moor this weekend and will be open from 1pm till late on Saturday and 1-6pm on Sunday.

Slung Low host a A Summer Ceilidh on Saturday, a wonderful end of summer evening of music, food, dance and laughter. Pay-what-you-decide. Book at www.slunglow.org/shows. Slung Low’s Warehouse In Holbeck is on Crosby Street, LS11 9RQ.

Clare Brooke will be headlining an evening of fundraising for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at The Holbeck club (LS11 9QX). There will also be a sponsored head shave, auction and bingo. 7pm-late

On Sunday it’s the inaugural LS11 Yard Sale from 1-5pm. Residents have signed up to hold a stall outside their home and you can find a map of the stall locations here.

The Friends of Middleton Park are exploring the history of reigion in Middleton with their free guided walk on Sunday. Meet at the visitor centre by the lake at 1:30pm, wear stout shoes and dress for the weather.

The final drop in consultation session about the new mass transit system’s route through South Leeds takes place at Cottingley Community Centre on (LS11 0HJ) on Monday from 3-6pm.

There are also a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from and in the central atrium at White Rose Shopping Centre, both 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, 10am-12pm and outside St Matthew’s Community Centre on Holbeck Moor Road from 10:30am-12pm. Finally they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street on Thursday 10am-12pm.

This Tuesday from 1-3pm, and then fortnightly in term time, the Leeds Libraries Story Bus is bringing its Story & Rhyme session to Parkfield Avenue, Beeston (LS11 7LX) near the children’s playground in Cross Flatts Park.

West Yorkshire Police, along with the Leeds City Council Capable Guardians and Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team are holding a personal safety event outside Tesco Express on Dewsbury Road on Wednesday from 10am-12pm. If your worried about being out on your own, or your family’s safety talk to the Police and partners who will have information and advice, along with safety items such as personal attack alarms and purse dipping kits which will be provided, during the event.

The SEN-Tastic group meets on Thursday. It’s open to anyone who cares for children with special needs, parents, siblings, carers, childminders and grandparents and offers coffee, friendship, advice and support. The group runs from 9:15-10:30am at St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, Beeston, LS11 8PD.

Leeds Baby Bank will be at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library on Thursday 10am-12pm offering support to people to access support services, community activity and longer-term support. They also gift families an essential top-up of items like nappies, wipes, formula and toiletries.

And finally, the St Luke’s Tenants & Residents Association will be holding their bi-monthly meeting on Thursday at St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, LS11 8PD, starting at 6:30pm.
