This month the Friends of Middleton Park guided walk is part of the Heritage Open Days events in Leeds. The walk and talk on Sunday (15 September 2024) explores the role of religion within Middleton.
From the Reformation until catholic emancipation the Catholic faith survived because some catholic gentry allowed their houses to be used as chapels with illegal chaplains. From the early to mid-1700’s Middleton and the Brandling family, were to gain ‘notoriety’ for having such a chapel at Middleton.
Later in the 1840’s the Brandling Family. now Church of England, donate land from Middleton Park for the building of a Church. St. Mary’s was consecrated providing the people of Middleton with their own church, removing the need to travel to Rothwell to worship. The visit includes a short history, viewing the graves of the Brandling family and a tour of the church, including the opportunity to visit the clock tower.
The walk will last about 90 mins to 2 hours, and is wheelchair friendly, but there are quite steep slopes. There are good surfaces, except for parts of the church yard and access to the clock tower.
Meet at Middleton Park Visitor Centre, off Town Street, LS10 3SH at 1:30pm on Sunday 15 September. No booking required, this is a free event.
