
Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.
We start on Saturday morning with the Middleton Makers Market, 10am-2pm, at Middleton Park Circus. Lots of lovely handmade items including clothing, jewelery, soaps and food; all made by local people.
Trinity Network host their Community Reflections Café on Saturday 10am-12pm at the United reformed Church, Nesfield Avenue, Belle Isle, LS10 3LG
The Rowland Road Play Patch, co-ordinated by Yorkshire Contemporary at Rowland Road WMC in Beeston is now open every Saturday 11am-2pm. This Saturday Chris Harman will be leading a den building session.
Litter Free Hunslet have got together with Hunslet Tenants & Residents Association to organise a litter pick. Join them at 12pm outside Involve Community Centre, LS10 2QE, all equipment will be provided.
On Saturday lunchtime Leeds United entertain Preston North End at Elland Road. Kick-off is at 12:30pm and you can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley.
Hunslet ARLFC entertain Wath Brow Hornets on Saturday afternoon at The Oval, opposite Morrisons. Kick off is at 2:30pm.
Semi-professional South Leeds FC play Brigg Town on Saturday afternoon at South Leeds Stadium, Middleton Grove, LS11 5DJ. The match also kicks off at 3pm.
St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, Beeston Hill, LS11 8PD are serving up their monthly family breakfast at 9:30am, then it’s the Palm Sunday Parade, with donkeys. Starting at the Salvation Army on Hunslet Hall Road at 10:30am and processing via Beeston Hill United Free Church to St Luke’s. Following a short service there will be donkey rides and brass band music on the green outside the church.
Sunday also sees the Manorfield Hall Easter Fair. Running from 12-4pm the fair promises handmade gifts, hampers, crafts, jewellery, clothes, hair accessories, cakes and refreshments plus performances by DAZL dancers. Manorfield Hall is on Newall Road, LS10 3RR.
On Sunday the Friends of Middleton Park are leading a guided Spring Walk around the park. Meet at the Visitor Centre by the lake at 1:30pm, dress for the weather including walking shoes or boots.
Hunslet residents can enjoy their own Palm Sunday parade, again with donkeys. Starting next to St Mary’s spire on Church Street at 2pm, the procession, with music and readings, will wind by the Hemmingway flats, visit Assisi Place and finish at the Church of the Nazarene, for donkey rides and refreshments.
The South Leeds Community Kitchen will be cooking up a free meal on Sunday, 4-5:45pm, at St Mary’s Church, Town Street, Beeston (opposite Nisa).
Also on Sunday the Leeds Knights take on the Peterborough Phantoms in the NIHL National League Playoffs. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road.
On Monday the Garnets and Oakleys Tenants & Residents Association hold their inaugural meeting at St Luke’s CARES charity shop, 246 Dewsbury Road, LS11 6JQ, starting at 6:30pm.
There are a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, 10am-12pm and at Ingram Gardens Community Centre from 10am-12pm. Finally they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street on Thursday 10am-12pm.
It’s the Holbeck Together Easter Egg hunt on Tuesday. It takes place on Holbeck Moor from 1:15-2:45pm with fun, treats and surprises. £2.50 per person, call 0113 245 5553 to book your space.
Learn about the history of animation and take part in an activity to become a digital animator for the day at Leeds Discovery Centre, Carlisle Road, LS10 1LB on Wednesday 10am-12pm. There are also tours of the collection on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Full details and booking here.
Wednesday is also play day in Hunslet. Join the family fun in the ‘Town Square’ outside the community hub & library from 10:45am-12pm. The event is delivered by the Hunslet & Belle Isle Community Project.
Leeds Baby Bank will be at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library on Thursday 10am-12pm offering support to people to access support services, community activity and longer-term support. They also gift families an essential top-up of items like nappies, wipes, formula and toiletries.
And finally, on Good Friday, Skelton Grange Environment Centre host an Easter Trail, 11am-1pm. It’s a delightful flower-filled outdoor trail through the enchanting woods and gardens of Skelton Grange. Wander among blossoms and greenery as you follow the trail, discovering hidden floral surprises along the way. Complete the trail and trade your discoveries for a chocolatey Easter treat at the finish. Tickets are £7.50 (adults and babies free), book here.
