Sports centre campaigners set to welcome Olympic torch

Campaigners fighting to get South Leeds Sports Centre reopened are set to ‘welcome’ the Olympic Torch as it passes within half a mile of the closed facility in less than a fortnight.

The torch is due through Hunslet and Beeston on the morning of  Monday, June 25. The SPLASH campaigners are stressing that in light of police activity in Scotland they’re not ‘protesting’, just ‘welcoming’ the torch as it passes the top of Cross Flatts Park  at around 8am.

South Leeds Sports Centre was closed by the council in November 2010 due to falling user numbers and rising costs. Campaigners argue it’s the only easily accessible sports facility in a deprived area.

There are proposals to build a new primary school on the site – but it’s also hoped to retain some sports facilities there.
