South Leeds Sports Centre campaigners say thanks

Protesters at the centre on Sunday.

The SPLASH campaign to reopen South Leeds Sports Centre held a mock ‘Olympic torch’ event on Sunday. Here, Sally Cieslik thanks people for their support and details the campaign’s next steps.

A big thank you to all 20 or so people who turned up and did the run – the majority made it all the way around – and to everyone who carried our fabulous torch and were interviewed about why they want the pool and centre re-opened.
It was great weather and a great reminder of what we’re all about.  People along the way were also very supportive even if they didn’t don their trainers and join in!
Hopefully – “South Leeds Olympic Torch Run – the video” will be available to view soon!
NEXT EVENTS:
May Day march SATURDAY 5th MAY – we have teeshirts and banners and this will give us a platform to raise awareness – assemble 11.30 for 12 noon set off outside the Art Gallery in Leeds.  Its a good route around town – not too far – and other groups against cuts will be there too. It will only be a couple of hours of your time at most.  If you don’t already have a teeshirt come along we may have some spares and we need people to hold banners too.
The real torch route – MONDAY 25th JUNE – details are as yet sketchy, but we are thinking of lining the route somewhere – possibly as near to the sports centre as it goes, to make our point once again about where all Olympians start their sporting experience – in their local pool or sports centre.. or possibly as its it going to John Charles maybe around that area and doing a circuit – more details as we get them on this – we realise this will be problematic as it is a weekday.
