Local football especially in the south of the city was rocked with the news that South Leeds FC (formerly Middleton FC) founder and long serving manager Reece Mudd decided to call time on a magnificent period for the club. Mudd oversaw the now highest ranked football team in South Leeds go from Sunday League football to Semi Professional status. The shocking news came on Wednesday evening (22 January 2025) on the club’s official Facebook page with the following statement:
“It is with great sadness that we have to announce that we have received the resignation of First Team Manager Reece Mudd who will step down from his role as manager of the club with immediate effect.
“8 Seasons, 6 Promotions, 11 Trophies.
“From Sunday League to Semi Professional.
“No words can describe what this man has done for this Football Club. The loyalty, the commitment and what he means to everyone involved at South Leeds.
“The true meaning of a legend. His story and reign on this football club will never be forgotten.
“Thank you for everything Gaffer and good luck on whatever is next for you. Ladies and Gentlemen, Reece Mudd.”
The news came as a massive surprise to the local football community with some of the following comments picked out.
“No this isn’t right you are Middleton/South Leeds football club I hope this can be resolved.”
” Wow shocked to see this a club he started.”
“Nothing short of amazing Reece well done mate.”
“Sad to see but what a achievement pal class well done.”
The news will certainly hit club the hard and with a new manager now in place it will only be a matter of time to see if the big shoes can be filled, but credit where credit is due it is nothing short of a fairytail story. South Leeds are currently battling to secure another promotion to add to their many accolades but will the departure of Mudd have an impact on this? Only time will tell.
