Updated: South Leeds councillor taken ill at council meeting

Updated 26 March 2026

Cllr Ed Carlisle has posted on Facebook to confirm that he is OK. He confirmed that he was taken to St James’s Hospital for tests and was allowed home late last night having been given the all clear.

He thanked fellow councillors, NHS staff and others from the community who had been in touch.

He said:

“I’m feeling washed out today, and will be taking it easy for a few days: please excuse the intermission.”

Councillor Ed Carlisle (Green, Hunslet & Riverside) was taken ill during the full council meeting at Leeds Civic Hall today (25 March 2026).

He was speaking in a debate about the work of the Licensing Committee when he stopped, clearly in some discomfort saying he would have to stop his speech there. Lord Mayor Cllr Dan Cohen who was chairing the meeting was clearly worried and encouraged him to get some fresh air.

Shortly afterwards the meeting broke for an adjournment and the Lord Mayor asked that councillors use the side doors only when leaving the council chamber. It is understood that Cllr Carlisle was receiving attention from paramedics.

When the meeting reconvened, the Lord Mayor explained that the group leaders from each party had met and agreed unanimously to wind up the meeting, saying:

“When one of our colleagues is currently unwell it would be entirely inappropriate to continue with today’s meeting.”

South Leeds Life sends good wishes to Cllr Carlisle and his family at this time and we hope he makes a speedy recovery.
