The ‘Beeston Hill Community Association’ (BHCA) is looking forward to meeting again on Monday 25 November 2024, 6:30-8pm at The Hamara Centre on Tempest Road. We hope you are able to join us for our next community meeting.
The BHCA is a community-led group which aims to give residents of Beeston Hill the opportunity to get to know neighbours, share their views on local life and be heard. We seek to work together to speak up for the area and bring about change.
Over the past year we have talked about lots of issues that really matter to residents of Beeston Hill residents such as increased drug related crime, drug dens and sex work, fly tipping and litter. Way back in January, over 70 people gathered to discuss the proposed changes to the Tempest Road/Dewsbury Road junction. Although we haven’t had much to report on this issue for ages, members of the BHCA committee have been chipping away behind the scenes. This week, we finally got a meeting with Highways to talk about the plans.
The option that has been chosen is the one that closes the central reservation, stopping people turning right in and out of Tempest Road and Colwyn Road. This was one of the proposals we looked at during our public meeting in January. During our discussions then, residents identified many flaws with this option, in particular people trying to u-turn around the ends of the reservation and the negative impact of traffic flow on smaller surrounding streets, potentially making them busier and more dangerous. It also doesn’t address the issue of visibility due to parking in front of the shops on Dewsbury Road and the bus stop.
The BHCA committee were able to feed these concerns from the community directly to Highways officers, who have agreed to go away and consider our points and see if any alterations can be made before the public consultation phase. We will keep residents informed on any changes and when the ‘official’ public consultation will take place. We need to be ready for when we get the chance to be ‘officially’ consulted.
We hope residents will continue to voice their views and concerns. Our hope is that local people are part of this decision making process and help to shape a solution that increases safety but doesn’t negatively affect surrounding streets and accessibility to Beeston Hill.
We will spend some time at our next meeting on Monday 25 November 6:30-8pm at Hamara, talking about this issue so do come along and make your views heard.
