Raiders take a tonking from Hunslet in West Wales

Hunslet RLFC comprehensively beat West Wales Raiders in another one-sided match at Stebonheath Park in Llanelli this afternoon (4 August 2018), helped by four tries from Josh Tonks.

For the second time this season the Parksiders put 86 points on the board, but unlike the previous match the Raiders managed one try themselves.

The first twenty minutes saw Hunslet cross the whitewash six times, racking up a 34 point lead. Scorers were: David Foggin-Johnston, Jack Lee, Daley Williams, Josh Tonks, Mufaro Mvududu and Gavin Duffy. Joe Sanderson kicked five goals.

It seemed records might tumble again, but the scoring slowed down until the end of the half when Josh Tonks scored his second try of the afternoon, closely followed by West Wales only score through Liam Silver and converted by Luke Williams.

Half time score: 6-40

West Wales Raiders had no substitutes to use and the team visibly tired in the second half. But Hunslet were unable to score again for a quarter of an hour, before Nyle Flynn started the scoreboard turning over again.

He was followed by Nathan Chappell, Mvududu’s second try and Tonks’ third try. Will Cooke then caught the ball from the ensuing kick off and ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts.Aiden Hema, Tonks and Matt Nicholson completed the scoring.

Final score: West Wales Raiders 6-86 Hunslet RLFC

West Wales Raiders are trying to build a new club from scratch growing their own players. It’s not been an easy first season for them. In reply to an irate fan asking why they had no substitutes (they lost a player to a late fitness failure), the club replied on Twitter:

“Transfer deadline gone, some current players not ready for this level, commitment and ability wise and 6 injured. No excuses from us, lesson learned he hard way.”

The win moves Hunslet up to fourth in BetFred League 1 as they aim to secure a play-off spot.
