Prince’s Trust Team return to Beeston

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme is a 12 week personal development programme, offering work experience, qualifications, practical skills, community projects and a residential week.  The Team members undertake their community project on weeks 5 and 6 of the programme and this helps them to prepare for their work placements on weeks 7 and 8. The Beeston Prince’s Trust Team is the second team that has run at Beeston Campus, Leeds City College.

The first team had worked with Groundwork at Lady Pitt Lane allotments and this 2nd team agreed to work at Holy Spirit Church on Tempest Road as part of the Love Beeston/Clean Beeston campaign. The project included preparing a flyer about the importance of recycling and disposing of litter that will be sent to residents in the Harlechs and Bromptons, removing litter and painting the railings around the church, building raised beds and planting fruit trees in the garden

Princes Trust bedsThe team raised funds for the project by doing a bag pack at Asda and carried out events within the college including running a tombola, a tuck shop and nail painting. Fundraising money was used to buy equipment, plants and compost for the garden.

To their credit they had to cope with dreadful weather conditions that hampered progress, but after 8 days the difference was amazing. Local residents showed their appreciation by giving the team equipment to make the job easier and a barber even treated them to fish and chips.

Holy Spirit will be the focus of the entry in the RHS Yorkshire in Bloom ‘It’s your neighborhood’ project in July this year. So a big thank you to the team for their hard work.
