Police are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision in Beeston yesterday which happened after a car failed to stop for officers.
The incident occurred when a roads policing vehicle tried to stop a Fiat Punto in Dewsbury Road, Beeston, at about 6.37pm. The vehicle made off before losing control a short time later and colliding with parked cars and the front of a shop near to the junction with Tempest Road.
The car was also in collision with a 34-year-old woman pedestrian who received serious injuries. She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
The driver of the car, a 23-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was also injured and taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are also not believed to be life threatening. He has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Chief Inspector Steve Palmer, of Leeds District Senior Leadership Team, said:
“The area would have been busy at the time and we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the circumstances leading up to it. We have made the Independent Police Complaints Commission aware of the incident and have notified West Yorkshire Police Professional Standards Department, which is normal practice for an incident of this nature.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact officers via 101 quoting log number 1517 of May 19.
The incident closed Dewsbury Road for several hours and the police helicopter was called in to assist officers on the ground.
