Parksiders too strong for Choughs

Cornwall 10-54 Hunslet RLFC

After a month without League action Hunslet got back to winning ways yesterday (13 May 2023) in the Cornish sun with a 10-54 victory at the Memorial Ground in Penryn.

Coach Alan Kilshaw had a strong squad for a game that was a potential banana skin, and his team didn’t let him down with a dominant second half performance.

Cornwall started off well though but Coby Nichol’s try was chalked off for crossing, before Hunslet started to click after the long journey.

On 16 minutes Nathan Conroy scooted over for a try against his former club before Michael Knowles converted, and although Aaronson and Whitton combined well for Cornwall the Parksiders scored again on 23 minutes this time through Adam Ryder (Knowles converting) 0-12.

So far so good for the visitors, but from a kick Cam Brown registered 4 points for the Choughs and Rusling converted, before former Hunslet favourite Tommy Ashton cleared up after a spilt kick to touch down for Cornwall. 10-12

With Cornwall in the ascendancy things got worse for the Parksiders as Sam Hallas was sent to the sin-bin. Hunslet led at the break 10-12.

A big second half was needed and Lewis Wray got Hunslet off to a great start as he powered over on 44 minutes. 10-18

Luke Collins broke for Cornwall, but the Hunslet defence was good. Then on 51 minutes Johnny Campbell (on loan from Batley Bulldogs) scored to give Hunslet some breathing space.

Hunslet were now in the ascendancy and hit Cornwall with a couple of quick tries. Sam Hallas sent Jordan Syme over before Alfie Goddard intercepted to go 80 metres to score. 10-32

It was game over effectively and Hunslet could spread the scoring out. Josh Jordan-Roberts and former Chough Joe Burton added tries, before on 73 minutes Danny Barcoe scooted over (this time Morgan Punchard adding the extras).

With only a couple of minutes remaining Jack Render finished off the scoring, crossing as the tenth Hunslet player to do so on the day.

Punchard converted 2/2 and Knowles 6/8 completing a satisfactory second half display and hard fought victory.

Hunslet move into third place in the League 1 table and are at home to fifth placed Workington Town next Sunday (21 May) 3pm kick off.
