Open day at new Holbeck supermarket

supermarket open dayHolbeck residents are being invited to a special event to offically mark the opening of a new supermarket in the area.

Tuesday, January 22 will see an open day being held at the new supermarket/cafe/restaurant/takeaway called ‘Venus’, which sells Turkish and Middle Eastern food and drink. The supermarket is already open, but owners are keen to invite local residents to sample what’s on offer and meet staff.

Venus Foods – a Manchester-based company –  has based its Leeds operation at the site of the former Kwik Save store, off Domestic Street, which has been empty since 2007.

Local residents have been campaigning for a supermarket in the area ever since Kwik Save left. Ian  Pickup, from the Voice of Holbeck group, says Holbeck residents have struggled to get access to things like fresh fruit and vegetables in the area.

A trailblazing social enterprise called Holbeck Foods, which offered fresh food to local residents, closed in 2010 due to a lack of support and volunteers.
