Cockburn School has certainly got talent – which has made me realise just how much South Leeds has got talent! writes Community Faith Sector Minister Deacon Al Henry.
I have just been to a splendid dance and music concert, together with a steel band, drumming and talent performed by the students of Cockburn School with is a School of Performing Arts in Beeston.
What I witnessed showed me how much the young people are dedicated to what they are doing, all the learning, rehearsals and practices they have done by themselves during lunch breaks and after school.
Friends, looking for an all girl band or boy band look no further, we have them in South Leeds, right on out doorstep. I counted over 6 or more performing groups within the school comprising drumming, steel band, two dance groups, choir, rock band together with music and the playing of instruments.
Well done young people, I’m proud of you, thanks for all your hard work and I wish you every success in the future.
All the best to those going to the Milton Keynes competitio on Sunday.
Thanks to all the parents/carers, staff and coaches. I would like to say a
special word of thanks to Caroline Stott – who, I believe, is head of music – for all her hard work and for co-ordinating and introducing the evening’s performance.

Congratulations to Cockburn students, staff and volunteers who took part in the Global Rock Challenge Northern Final at the Grimsby Auditorium on 21st June 2012, having already won the heats at St George’s Hall, Bradford on Tuesday 24th April.
Their 8-minute performance ‘House of Fun’ was based on the madness and magic created by the children’s author Dr. Seuss. As well as winning a number of special awards including ‘Best Staging’ and ‘Best Set Design’ in the heats, this time they were awarded awards for ‘Choreography’, ‘Staging’ and ‘Spirit’.
The team were delighted to find out they had come in first place against some strong competition from schools from across the north of England and Northern Ireland!
We are now classed as a premier league school and the team have been selected to perform at the national finals on the 22nd July 2012 in Milton Keynes.
