Mystery of the Holbeck Drinking Water Fountain

Cross Flatts Fountain - from Leodis

I was recently talking to my cousin, George Peacock, about his recollections of old Holbeck. George emigrated to the USA around 50 years ago and now lives in Florida. He was born in Chelsea Street, Holbeck, in the area where the multi-storey flats were built in the 1960s and which have now been demolished. During his youth in the 1930s and 1940s he remembers a large drinking water fountain on Holbeck Moor (see previous comments). He believes it was situated on the Elland Road side of the Moor. It was larger than the one which was in Cross Flatts Park shown above and is reprinted from the Leodis website. He recalls drinking from large metal cups which were secured to the fountain by metal chains.

Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to find any images or references to the existence of the fountain. Does anybody have any recollection of it, where it went, or better still, a photograph of it? If you do, let me know through this blog.
