Middleton FC were crowned champions of the Leeds & District Senior Challenge Cup after beating local rivals Hunslet Club 2-1 on Wednesday evening (20 April 2022) at Farsley Celtic’s Citadel Stadium.
The mouth watering final was set up after Middleton defeated Wortley 3-1 and Hunslet beat Beeston St Anthony’s 2-0 in the semi finals.
A decent crowd saw Middleton take the lead from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. James Law calmly slotted home to see his side 1-0 up. Chances for both sides could of added to the score, but neither side were able to take them and Middleton led 1-0 at half time.
A minute into the second half Hunslet found the equaliser through a Middleton own goal. Scrappy defending from a Hunslet corner found the ball being bundled into the back of the net to even the tie up.
It was end to end for the majority of the half and both sides had some brilliant chances to get themselves in front if it wasn’t for some heroic Goalkeeping from both teams. The game seemed to be heading to penalties but a late attack for Middleton in the 89th minute saw Richard Collier dribble through the Hunslet defence to get the ball away to Callum Harrison who fired the winner home from close range much to the delight of Middleton.
