Marks, set, go: South Leeds Lakers first social run

Twenty hardy souls turned up at Beeston Co-op tonight (10 February 2015) to take part in the inaugural run of the newly formed South Leeds Lakers running group.

Newly trained run leader Ewan Mitchell explained that the group was for new runners and experienced runners. It builds on the Cross Flatts Parkrun which takes place every Saturday morning and sees up to a hundred runners and walkers complete the 5km course.

South Leeds Lakers will provide a regular social run – “a sociable run at a conversational pace”. Runners are encouraged to chat, get to know each other, swap running tips and pet peeves.

Funding has been provided by Run England and the Hunslet Rugby Foundation and the group has three trained leaders. If the group grows as hoped, it will be possible to have separate groups running to different paces or distances. For the first run the group agreed that a 5km run was about right and set off in hi-viz vests down Old Lane, Dewsbury Road, Hunslet Hall Road and back up Beeston Road.

The group will run every Tuesday night at 7pm meeting at Beeston Co-op. Just turn up, there’s no need to book and it’s free. For more information ring Ben Fraser on 07824 302927 or email: ben.fraser@wysport.co.uk. You can follow South Leeds Lakers on Twitter @SthLeedsLakers.
