Residents across Beeston, Beeston Hill, and Holbeck took part in the very first LS11 Yard Sale on Sunday 22 September. Many households across the community participated in the event transforming their driveways and front doors into pop up stalls, selling a variety of bargains to their neighbours. The event saw a great turnout, with locals enjoying a day of bargain hunting and engaging with their community.
A yard sale, for those unfamiliar, is an event where individuals sell unwanted items from their homes, typically setting up stalls in their front gardens. It both offers a sustainable way to declutter and recycle whilst giving neighbours a chance to connect.
Local campaigner and event co-organiser Matt Rogan was actively involved, spending the day visiting stalls and checking in with residents. They say:
“Going around and talking to stallholders was lovely. There was lots of excitement, and it was so good to see people going around their neighbourhoods. A massive thank you to everyone involved!”
One of the other organisers of the event, Councillor Ed Carlisle (Green, Hunslet and Riverside), took part in the yard sale himself, and said of the event:
“Many thanks to everyone who took part. This was the first time we’re doing it and we hope that we’re laying the foundations for future years: could we make this an annual fixture in the life of our community?”
With hopes of making the event even bigger and better next year, can you help out? Residents who are interested in getting involved in the next yard sale, or reviewing this year’s, are encouraged to get in touch. Information from this year’s event can be found on Facebook here, or you can email ls11yardsale@gmail.com.
