Leeds Fed helps customer get own radio show

Customer, David Garland, has got his own radio show after going on Leeds Federated Housing Association’s Express Yourself programme.

David Garland 2David was unemployed and going through a hard time when he signed up for a media course with Express Yourself.  Afterwards, he started work as a volunteer with South Leeds Media’s community radio station and today, he hosts his own weekly radio show.

Express Yourself is a programme of fun, creative activities designed for Leeds Fed customers which take place at different venues across the city. Customers can choose from a wide range of exciting activities from radio and media, to arts and crafts, and even bushcraft skills.

David Garland said:

“I am so grateful to Leeds Fed for the opportunity they gave me through Express Yourself. It gave me something to get out of bed for and has led to me doing my radio show. I’ve also found a job now and my life has changed for the better in so many ways.”

Leeds Fed’s Customer involvement Officer, Sharon Garewal said:

“Express Yourself is a creative way for customers to have fun learning new skills, build confidence and meet others who have similar interests. We want to inspire people to get involved with Leeds Fed and their local communities.

“I’m delighted that Express Yourself gave David the encouragement he needed to try something new and become a radio presenter.”

David’s radio show is a mix of music, chat and guest interviews and is aimed mainly at a gay audience. It is broadcast on the South Leeds Media website www.southleedsmedia.org.uk at 11pm on weeknights and at 10pm at weekends.

Leeds Fed works with a range of organisations including The Conservation Volunteers Hollybush Centre at Kirkstall, the Swarthmore Education Centre and East Leeds FM to deliver a wide range of Express Yourself activities.
