Sunday 31 May is a day of performance, film, lecture and food at Slung Low‘s How To … Festival under the viaduct arches in Holbeck.
Myra Dubois, Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Russell J Hall & Roger Curzon, Freddie Brook and Manjit’s Kitchen will all be on hand to teach and entertain. And because it’s the How To… Festival everything you can learn new skills in £ pay-what-you-decide creative workshops though out the day; learn how to make the entertainment and the food. No experience necessary!
At 11.00am, Manjit’s Kitchen lead a workshop where she demonstrates how to cook delicious vegetarian Indian dishes and curries, and you can then have a go at creating them yourselves – all ingredients and equipment are provided for you. At 2.15 Freddie Brook teaches you How To…Simply Amaze Your Friends in this workshop that focuses on the performativity of magic and how to incorporate your own style into the tricks that you do. No previous experience necessary, just the desire to join in!
At 3:30pm discover Magical Inventions and Magickal Tales with Sheffield Circle of Magician members Russell J Hall and Roger Curzon. In this interactive activity, Russell leads the first half with an illustrated exploration of the curious history of magical invention, followed by Roger who will weave strange, magickal tales around the bizarre curios and artefacts discovered in his late, unlamented Uncle Albert’s suitcase.
Then at 5:00pm Professor Vanessa Toulmin takes you on a filmic tour of Edwardian Leeds with live piano accompaniment presenting pioneering films of showmen Mitchell & Kenyon in Leeds.
We’ll break for dinner at 6pm – Enjoy delicious food from Manjit’s Kitchen and refreshments from the HUB’s £1 bar with free tea and coffee (with live music from Bianca Gerald) before rounding off the day with a hilarious performance for grown ups from Myra Dubois – Auntie Myra’s Fun Show is at 7:30pm.
Of course, we don’t want you to feel that you have to do everything – its absolutely fine to pick and choose!
Slung Low’s artistic director Alan Lane said:
“At its best, theatre is about being astounded. For me there’s few better ways for that to happen than to experience stage magic. The chance to learn how to do magic yourself is a part of our mission at Slung Low to reduce the distance between audience, participants and performer. “
There is a very limited capacity for all festival workshops and performances which must be booked in advance so to reserve places please email boxoffice@slunglow.org with the number of places you wish to book for each event and a contact telephone number.
