BARLA National Cup: Hunslet Club Parkside 37 v 10 Fryston Warriors
Sunday 28 May at Featherstone Rovers’ L D Nutrition Stadium
Hunslet Club Parkside won the BARLA National Cup for the first time in their history with an excellent 37-10 victory against Pennine League Champions Fryston Warriors in the Post Office Road sunshine on Sunday afternoon. Scoring six tries to two Parkside put in a superbly disciplined performance from 1 to 17 with Craig McShane at the back and skipper Jamie Fields up front outstanding throughout.

Fryston scored the opening try of the match when Dobek crossed in the 8th minute but it took Parkside just 6 further minutes to open their account when the evergreen Carl Briggs crashed over near the posts from Hullocks short pass. The next two scores in the opening half both went to the South Leeds outfit, Man of the Match Jamie Fields using his power and strength to score twice from short range in the 32nd and 36th minutes. Fields converted both of his scores, as well as Briggs’ earlier score himself.
The first half came to a close with Fryston scoring their second and last try of the match through Pickersgill which followed a Parkside handling error in trying to put the game to bed at the other end of the field and made the half time score 18-10 to HCP.
As Carl Briggs said after the game the first ten minutes of the second half were vital. Playing down the big Featherstone slope and having scored just before half time to reduce the deficit Fryston must have fancied their chances of kicking on. Instead a big defensive effort from Hunslet prevented Fryston from increasing their score.
Fryston’s poor discipline, which in the second half lead to the dismissal of Firth on 50 minutes for a punch in the tackle, a sin binning for a high tackle and a further red card two minutes from time, was a factor in Hunslet Club Parkside’s big victory, but Hunslet’s refusal to be intimidated was equally as important.
Second half scores for Hunslet went to Craig McShane on 58′, Ben Shulver on 64′ and Kieran Murphy on 79′ with Danny Rose adding a drop goal for good measure. Everyone played their part in a historic victory played in front of a 1000 plus attendance, a big contingent having made the short journey to Featherstone to cheer their side to victory. The next target for the 2017 season will now surely be a big push to achieve a third successive promotion into the elite National Conference League Premier Division!
