To mark this year’s International Women’s Day (8 March) Northern Monk Brew Co have announced a special beer release with Leeds Roses Ice Hockey team, and will be hosting a talk on the history of women in brewing ahead of the Roses match versus Sheffield Shadows on 11 March.
The talk, ‘From Alewives to Hellraisers: Exploring the Role of Women in Medieval Brewing’, will be hosted by Dr Rachael Gillibrand, an historian of gender and life-cycle in the middle ages at the University of Leeds, as she uncovers the forgotten history of female-dominated brewing in the Middle Ages and celebrates the trailblazing ‘alewives’ who shaped the craft beer industry we know and love today.
The talk coincides with the release of Game On, a collaborative beer between Northern Monk and the Leeds Roses, a team that the brewery has sponsored since the Roses’ foundation in 2020. The beer, a 5.0% hazy pale ale, features the colours and jersey of the Leeds Roses, and a QR code so that drinkers can find out more about the team.
Following the talk from Dr Gillibrand, attendees, along with members of the Monks team, will head over to Planet Ice to support Leeds Roses’ match versus Sheffield in the Women’s National Ice Hockey League.
Attendees at the talk will also get a free can of the Game On pale ale and there will also be samples of the beer available to try at the ice hockey match.

The talk from Dr Gillibrand will be at 4.30pm and be hosted at Northern Monk’s Refectory in the Old Flax Store, off Marshall Street in Holbeck, with the ice hockey match kicking off at 7:30pm at Planet Ice, Elland Road.
