Help to get off the couch and start running in 2020

Leeds Dock in Hunslet is the venue a new lunchtime running group. Run Leader John Fielding explains:

“The group is aimed at people that have never run before, or have not run for a long time. Couch To 5k (C25K) is an ideal way of starting your running journey or getting back into running after a long spell away from it.”

The C25K programme was developed by the NHS and builds up gradually over nine weeks from mostly walking in the first week to running a full 5 km at the end. It has been used by thousands of people to improve their fitness.

Whilst you can follow the C25K programme on your own by downloading the free app to your phone, joining a group will provide you with more support and solidarity.

The runs take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on 14 January. Meet outside North Star Coffee on The Boulevard near the Royal Armouries.

You can register at runtogether.co.uk or email sharon.atherton@leeds.gov.uk or johnfielding1972@gmail.com

South Leeds Lakers running club are also organising a C25K group which will start on Tuesday 4 February at 7pm from Beeston Co-op. Again these sessions will be run by qualified run leaders and are free, friendly and supportive. These courses usually fill up quickly so sign up now using this form.

Run Talk Run is an informal run and chat balancing health and mental wellbeing. The group meets outside Fitness First at Bridgewater Place at 5:45pm every Monday for gentle jog/walk and chat along the canal.

Yet another opportunity is parkrun – a 5km walk, jog or run. Again, it’s a very friendly sociable activity where everyone’s achievements are celebrated. We have two parkruns in South Leeds – at Cross Flatts Park in Beeston (starting near the Beeston Road gates) and Middleton Woods (starting near the Leeds Urban Bike Park). They start at 9am every Saturday, you can just turn up, but register online first and print off your barcode to get a recorded time.
