The first-ever Hunslet Christmas Festival is underway, with a series of events across the community this month.
The festival kicked off with a lights switch-on on Church Street on 19 November 2021, and has since featured carol singing with Low Road Primary School at the Hunslet Community Hub & Library, all-age craft sessions, public tree decorating, storytelling, and a cycling event.
Forthcoming events include a coffee morning for teen students at the Involve Centre to meet with residents at Assisi House sheltered accommodation, a treats giveaway at Morrisons, and a series of events organised by the Hunslet Gathering.
The festival centres around the Church Street part of Hunslet, and is coordinated by the Hunslet Tenants and Residents Association (TARA) – in conjunction with a range of partners.
Stewart Walton, who chairs the TARA, commented:
“Our particular area of Hunslet has lost Christmas for many a year. So it’s been our pleasure to mark the start of Christmas with these events, which will hopefully become a staple for many years to come, and will grow. Our mission as the TARA is to give back this community to the community – and I’m not afraid to act the fool while I do it! There are huge plans in the pipeline and many events to follow.”
