Get your skates on!

Get Set Leeds Local is a Leeds City Council Active Leeds project with partners, funded by Sport England, listening and building on community ideas for collectively supporting more ways for the local residents of Beeston Hill and Holbeck to move more.

We like to have our ear to the ground to hear your ideas, and work with others in the community to bring them to life, through connecting, funding, and training opportunities. One seed of an idea came from a resident back in April, after reading these articles, who connected with us after her daughters had thought it would be great to have some rollerskating sessions in the local area.

They found a great space at Cross Flatts Park, we linked with Be Good Skates who are passionate about getting new people on rollerskates, chatted with LS-TEN and got support from Leeds Girls Can ambassador Susan who had also applied for our Community Chest Pot for some rollerskates.

Together we developed the new Park Roll sessions, which take place every Saturday 10am at Cross Flatts Park (if the weather isn’t too bad). Free for anyone to come along to (bookings preffered currently due to Covid). Utilising some extra Get Set Leeds Local funding (and thanks also to support from Streetgames), we will have free skates and pads which can be borrowed. Join Leeds Saturday Park Roll on Facebook for latest updates.

Over the summer we’re looking forward to coming together with local groups in Holbeck to make it possible for two summer events on Holbeck Moor to take place (pop 31 July in your diary), showcasing lots of good stuff going on locally, along with an event in Cross Flatts Park around all things cycling in August. If you’d like to be involved in some way at any of the events then just get in touch.

Following the success of the World Triathlon Series, Get Set Leeds Local are working with British Triathlon to launch Tri for Healthy Minds. A city wide Open Access session (for those with mild to moderate mental health challenges), which will take place weekly at Cross Flatts Park. The first 8 week element will be cycle sessions to meet likeminded people, while learning new skills and improving your mental health and wellbeing in the beautiful Cross Flatts Park. Weekly sessions will begin end of July. Contact karen.peck@leeds.gov.uk for further information.

Have you ever been on a Dinosaur Safari? Explore Leeds as you’ve never seen it before, on an Augmented Reality Dinosaur adventure. Use your mobile phone to look out for friendly dinos roaming Cross Flatts Park over the summer holidays, and across other parks all over Leeds (not to mention stomping through the city waterfront area), and have your picture taken with them! All you need to do is download the Love Exploring app for FREE at loveexploring.co.uk.

Love Exploring is a new app that’s coming to Leeds for the first time this summer, offering a great new way for families to explore their local parks and beyond. Dinosaur Safaris are planned in six locations including Cross Flatts Park, from mid-July onwards…. Watch out for more Dino information coming soon…

We have a Community Chest Pot fund (up to £300) to support community good ideas, which will support others in their community to move more in some way. If you have a good idea, then get in touch karen.peck@leeds.gov.uk / 07891 274130 and follow us on Facebook @GSLHolbeck&BeestonHill and on Twitter @GetLeeds
