First steps retail, warehouse and ESOL training at St Luke’s CARES

St. Luke’s CARES charity shop, situated on Dewsbury Road, caters for the community by selling good quality second-hand furniture, bric-a-brac, white goods, and electricals. What you may not know is that for the past 6 years St Luke’s has also been running its very own free community retail course. St Luke’s CARES offers a 7-week retail, warehouse, and IT course in a warm and welcoming environment for people looking at getting back into work, training, or volunteering.

The course, a Level One Skills for Further Learning and Employment is held in St Luke’s brand-new classroom, at the shop. There is a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with no previous experience or qualifications necessary. The course runs for 7 weeks, 3 days a week, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 10am-2pm.  However, there is flexibility in this, and they can cater to most schedules.

We recently received a 3 year grant from the National Lottery Community Fund to run the courses, support volunteering and ESOL classes. So the courses are back following a break during the pandemic. They started up again in September and they have been as busy as ever – numbers are high, and places are in demand. The next course starts on Monday 17 January 2022.

ESOL classes run every Tuesday 10am-12pm, offering a mixed class for beginners and intermediate levels. There is a rolling program, and you can join anytime.

Corrina our ESOL teacher says:

“It’s a very conversational based class in a friendly environment chatting about everyday life topics. What has been lovely is  people in the local community finding new friendships and giving each other support.”
