Fire damaged rail wagon goes for repair

Following the fire at Jewson’s timber yard adjacent to the Middleton Railway in July 2018, a number of items on the railway were fire damaged.

The worst case was a covered van, known as a PALVAN, which was burned out and all its contents destroyed. The Middleton Railway has now been able to send this vehicle away to specialist contractors for a full overhaul and return to service.

The photograph by MRT member Cedric Wood shows the damaged vehicle leaving our premises for its journey to Stanegate Restorations in the North East.

Middleton Railway, the world’s first commercial railway, runs trains every weekend through the summer as well as bank holidays and Wednesdays during school holidays. The museum at their Moor Road station in Hunslet is free to visit.
