Enforcement cameras to be installed outside Beeston school

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are to be installed on a Beeston street to enforce School Street restrictions at Hugh Gaitskell Primary School.

The cameras are part of a trial at two schools, the other is Chapel Allerton Primary, and are funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

A council report dated 28 January 2026 says:

“The trial aims to address ongoing compliance issues with existing Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs), improve safety outside schools, and support the wider objectives of the School Streets programme.”

School Streets aim to remove vehicle movements on streets outside the school at the start and end of the day, in this case on St Anthony’s Drive. The restriction does not affect residents who live on the street.

The School Street restrictions have been in place at Hugh Gaitskell Primary since 2020.

A consultation was carried out in December involving local residents, businesses, parents and carers. 82% of parents and carers supported the introduction of cameras, whilst 60% of residents and businesses also supported them.

Cameras and signage are expected to be installed shortly allowing the trial to go live after the half term break on Monday 23 February.

Other School Streets in South Leeds include outside Lane End Primary, Cockburn Ingram Road, Middleton St Mary’s Primary and Clapgate Primary.
