Leeds councillors will on Thursday decide whether to grant planning permission for controversial plans to demolish the historic Middleton Arms pub and replace it with a new Aldi store.
The proposals – which are recommended for refusal by council planning officers – were originally discussed by members of the east plans panel last month. The councillors decided to visit the site before making any decision – and are due to inspect the site on Thursday morning, just hours before the planning meeting starts at 1.30pm in the Civic Hall.
The proposals have split local residents. A recent South Leeds Life poll showed 54% of respondents in favour of the Aldi application, 34% against and the rest ‘not bothered’ either way.
