Countdown to Beeston Festival

With four weeks to go, organisers have unveiled their plans for a cycle-themed Beeston Festival on Saturday 14 June under the slogan ‘Let’s Go Cycling!’

Family friendly festivalThe Festival, sponsored by Unity Homes & Enterprise, will take place in Cross Flatts Park from 12-5pm. Organisers are hoping to build on the excitement of the Tour de France coming to Leeds and help get more people in Beeston cycling. There will be opportunities to try out different types of bike, to get your own bike repaired, or to go on an organised ride. Children can take their first steps in learning to ride or improve their cycling skills with Bike-ability.

The cycling theme will be carried on to a new mural that will be created on the day on the back wall of the Watsonian Pavilion. Artists will be supervising, but the community will be making this artwork. A “graffiti car” will also be decorated to create an advert for the Tour de France Grand Depart, the car will them be displayed at Kirkgate Market.

Councillor Angela Gabriel, Chair of the Festival Committee said:

“Beeston Festival is a fun family day out and kicks off a summer of exciting events in Cross Flatts Park. We want everyone to come along and have a good time. There’ll be lots to do on the day, so come ready to have a go at something new!”

As well as cycling, there will be the usual mix of entertainment with local dance groups in the Arena and a full line-up on the Main Stage, headlined by world music band Celtarabia. Over a hundred stalls have been booked for a busy Bazaar area full of food from around the world, local produce and community groups.

The Children’s area will feature an arts and crafts marquee, climbing wall and bouncy castle, whilst two Breeze inflatables and a techno-truck will cater for young people. Beeston Broncos will host their rugby match against Emley Moor in the park at 1pm and as usual there will be a fun fair.

Beeston Festival is run by an independent committee of volunteers and relies on volunteers on the day to make things run smoothly. If you would like to help out on the day please email: beestonfestival@gmail.com.

The 2014 Beeston Festival has been sponsored by Unity Homes & Enterprise, Unison Community Health Branch, DePuy Synthes, Leeds Federated Housing Association and Citu. It has also been supported financially by Leeds City Council’s Inner South Area Committee, by the Councillors of Beeston & Holbeck and City & Hunslet wards, Leeds Inspired and Community First.
