Candidates announced for May’s local elections

The candidates for the 2021 Leeds City Council elections, and the West Yorkshire Mayor election have been announced.

We’ve published full lists of the candidates on separate pages for Beeston & Holbeck ward, Hunslet & Riverside ward and Middleton Park ward and for the West Yorkshire Mayor.

We’re writing to all the candidates to ask them about why they are standing and what their policies are. We will publish their answers as they send them in so keep checking back to compare answers and make your choice.

We will also be hosting online hustings for each of our three council wards where you will be able to put your questions to the candidates. These will take place in the week commencing Monday 26 April. We will publish more information including how you can join the meeting soon, but in the meantime have a think about what question you would like to pose.

South Leeds Life does not support any political party, but we urge all our readers to use their vote on 6 May.

If you haven’t voted before, or have moved house recently you will need to register to vote by midnight on Friday 16 April. You can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote it only takes five minutes, have your National Insurance number to hand.

As previously reported, voters are being encouraged to register for a postal vote as there are likely to be delays at polling stations due to Covid-19 safety measures. The deadline to apply for a postal vote for these elections is 5pm on Tuesday 20 April 2021. Find out more at: www.leeds.gov.uk/your-council/elections/postal-voting

Again, due to the pandemic, counting of votes will take place over several days this year. Votes will be varified on Friday 7 May; the Leeds City Council votes will be counted on Saturday 8 May; and West Yorkshire Mayor votes will be counted on Sunday 9 May. We will bring you the results as soon as they are announced.
