The Tetley is a new centre for contemporary art and learning due to open in November 2013, writes Kathryn Welford.
Located in the stunning art deco headquarters of the former Tetley Brewery site in Hunslet, The Tetley will be a free public cultural attraction with galleries, learning spaces, café bar, shop, and a broad programme of creative activity for visitors to take part in.
The Tetley will be operated by Project Space Leeds, a contemporary visual arts charity.
As new tenants of this building and custodians of a small selection of archive objects relating to the brewery’s past, we are keen to explore the history and heritage of the site and understand more about Tetley’s as such an icon of Leeds’ industrial past.
More importantly we want to draw on the knowledge within local communities to understand and share the individual, human stories that are part of Tetley’s.
We would like to work with a team of research volunteers who can help us explore this knowledge and share these stories. Volunteers do not need to have any experience in history or research.
Research might involve delving into archives, meeting historians or experts as well as listening to and recording the stories of other members of the public who have a connection with Tetley’s. By gathering these stories we hope to better understand our new home and share some of the Tetley story with our visiting public.
We are interested in hearing from anyone who may like to take part in this project as a volunteer or as a contributor to our research. Please contact Kathryn Welford, Head of Participation, at The Tetley if you would like to get involved or would like more information.
We are very interested to see if there is a public interest in this project and contacting us does not involve any commitment on your part. We are just keen to hear from people who may want to help us and join us on our journey of discovery!
