Breathe Easy: exercise for people with COPD

Here’s our first entry for the 2019 St Luke’s CARES Community Awards, it has been submitted by Julie Gill on behalf of Breathe Easy groups in South Leeds. For details of how YOUR community group can enter please click here.

My father passed away in January 2016 of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and heart failure at the age of 80.

Shortly afterwards the British Lung Foundation contacted me to ask if I wanted to deliver some breath easy exercise classes funded by the British Lung Foundation. I jumped at the chance as I’ve been teaching exercise classes in our local community for over 20 years now.

I have been running three groups weekly in Beeston, Middleton and Bramley for about a year now but the British Lung Foundation have pulled the funding so the groups have become independent groups.

We have the hall rental fees which range from £10 to £20 per hour and my fees which are £30 an hour. The groups have set up their own bank accounts and would be delighted if they could get a bit of financial help towards keeping the groups going especially in the winter months when a lots of the members suffer from respiratory infections.
