New projects at South Leeds Music Centre

Music centreThis term the South Leeds Music Centre had two new projects, writes Sophie Bevan from South Leeds Music Centre:

Music passport

Music passport is aimed at young children under 8 who are interested in music, but don’t know what instrument they would like to play.

It’s also a great opportunity for those with some musical experience to try something different.

These drop in sessions will feature singing and musical games as well as the chance to have a go at some instruments, such as recorder and keyboard.

This session will be held on Saturday mornings at Cockburn school CLC from 10.00 -10.30. Please feel free to drop in!

Young leaders

There will be a taster session for the Young Leaders project at the Music Centre on Saturday 26th January 2013 at 10 am, with the course starting the following Saturday at 9.30 – 11 am.

The Young Music Leader Training Programme is designed for musical high fliers; those aged between 14 and 18 who love playing music, those who are considering going into teaching and those who want to work with younger children.

After six training sessions we will help you find a placement either at the music centre or nearer your home or school so that you can practice your new leadership skills and gain valuable voluntary experience which will look good for UCAS, a personal statement, cv or job application.

During the course we will help you develop your musical skills and ‘soft’ skills. Each week you will have the opportunity to observe (either live or recorded) music activity classes with younger children and then review/reflect as a group what you have seen in terms of leadership and the skills it requires. Towards the end of the programme you can have the opportunity to ‘lead’ a musical activity yourself if you wish.

The course will look at how rhythm, pitch, timbre, improvisation and devising form an important part of musical education.

We will also help you develop the ‘soft’ skills of working as a team towards a single goal, leadership, decision-making, confidence and performance.
