Beeston Community Forum held its fourteenth Annual General Meeting at the Beeston Village Community Centre last night.
About thirty residents braved the cold and rain to attend the meeting. Also present were the three Beeston & Holbeck ward Councillors and Cllr Stewart Golton representing the Liberal Democrat group on Leeds City Council. Cllr David Congreve addressed the meeting and commended the Forum as one of the most active in the city.
“If organisations want to speak to the community in Beeston, I direct them to the Forum.”
The meeting considered an annual report that showed that many organisations had visited the Forum in the previous twelve months. These included senior officers from the Education, Transport and Development departments at the Council, the NSPCC, West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (Metro) and Hilary Benn MP. Major debates during the year had been around the rival Tesco and Asda bids for a supermarket on Old Lane and the proposed Park & Ride scheme at Elland Road.
Officers and committee members were then elected by the meeting as follows:
- Chairman: Christine Thornton
- Vice Chairman: Richard Bell
- Treasurer: Robert Winfield
- Secretary: Robert Winfield
- Committee: Greg Turton, John Fenton, Mark Parry, Arthur Kirby & Doris Brookes
The next meeting of the Forum will be on Thursday 3rd January 2013 when the guest speaker will be Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of Leeds United FC.
