The South Leeds Community Hiking group are gearing up for another set of trips this summer – with their first less than two weeks away, on Saturday 13 April (2019), to the famous Malham Cove in North Yorkshire.
The walk will cover 8.5 miles, and take about 5 hours – and there will also be opportunities to enjoy the sights and sounds of Malham village. All you need is a good pair of shoes or boots, a waterproof jacket, and food and drink. Minibuses will leave south Leeds at 8am, with pick-ups in both LS10 and LS11, and return early evening. Adults are asked to contribute £4, and children £2, to cover diesel costs – but if money is a barrier to attending, free places are available. Beeston resident John McKee, one of those coordinating the trip, commented:
“The South Leeds Walkers are taking to the hills around picturesque Malham this month, and there will be something for everyone: leafy woodland, open moors, and a waterfall scramble. All abilities are welcome, and experienced members will be on hand – to share their love of ‘wild walking’, and with the skills to keep you safe. Join us if you can!”
Further trips are planned for Saturday 20 July (probably to North Wales), and Sunday 29 September (probably to Cumbria or maybe even Scotland, in which case it would become an overnight trip including Saturday 28 too). Full info to follow – but day trips will cost up to £5, overnight trips up to £30. The organisers are also hoping to see more short local walks happening this year: join the FB group to find out more.
The South Leeds Community Hiking project is run by local volunteers (new volunteer organisers always welcome!), and has run since 2013. There have been over 20 trips so far – to locations around Wales, Yorkshire, the Lakes, and Scotland. It aims to give south Leeds residents affordable opportunities to get out of the city, and enjoy challenging but fun walks together.
