Last days of the Tivoli

It’s been a landmark in Middleton for decades, but the Tivoli cinema is now being demolished to make way for private housing.

The cinema opened in 1934 but closed in 1960, becoming the first cinema in Leeds to convert to a bingo hall. It finally closed its doors in 2009 and has been empty since, the roof was removed in 2012.

South Leeds Life understands that the demolition is to allow the redevelopment of the site to proceed. Planning permission exists for the building of eight semi-detached houses and four flats, all for private sale.

  1. By the time I was born the Cinema at Tivoli was shut. I do remember consistently using Johnny Appleyard Barbers or the mini shop next to him.

  2. Remember my mam sent me to get a decent haircut for my sister’s wedd8ng

  3. Yep 10 bob for skinhead, crew cut even tennis ball cut with a mountain of comics to read whilst queuing. I also remember the mini cabin/shop where you could buy old English cider. Johnny was a well respected gent.

  4. Child hood memories of playing squash on the side of the Tivoli wall. Working at the Tivoli shop packing 10p bags of sweets . Mum going to the bingo there. Sad to see it go
