Leeds City College is running a Digital Literacy course to help people prepare for the new Universal Credit benefit system.
The controversial new benefit is being phased in and will replace six existing benefits with one monthly payment. It will replace: Child Tax Credit; Housing Benefit; Income Support; Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA); Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Working Tax Credit.
Another big change is that you will only be able to claim Universal Credit online.
The 20 hour course runs at the Beeston Centre on Burton Avenue, off Dewsbury Road and is free to people in reciept of state benefits. The course themes are:
Becoming familiar with a keyboard, phone, iPad and laptop computer
- Safeguarding and online security
- Wi-fi
- Connecting to emails to receive messages
- Online forms, completion and verification process
- Social media awareness, using Facebook and LinkdIn to look for jobs
- Accessing Universal Credit online form and video
- Using Google forms to complete a variety of mock documents to assist with benefit claims
- Awareness of how employers use social networking to advertise jobs
On completion of the course you should have the skills to help you with the online Universal Credit application.
