Local resident Al Garthwaite, from our friends at South Leeds Community Radio, has written this guest post for South Leeds Life on useful ways of keeping warm in the cold:
A new programme and information CD, Keeping Warm in Cold Weather, on practical, low-cost ways of keeping warm in cold weather has been produced by South Leeds Community Radio.
The 8½ minute programme will air on www.southleedscommunityradio.org.uk at 4pm on Mondays-Thursdays and on Saturday afternoons, until Spring is truly with us. From 1st March it will be available as a podcast.
The CD will be widely distributed locally in South Leeds and be available free of charge from health and community centres, doctors’ surgeries and other outlets. It will also be played on other radio stations such as Bramley Community Radio and Tempo FM.
South Leeds Community Radio questioned local people about their strategies for keeping warm in icy conditions. These ranged from hot water bottles, extra clothes and bedsocks to taking advantage of free insulation offers like Leeds City Council’s Wrap Up Leeds, Green Doctor and Care and Repair.
It was useful to find out how many things you can do to keep warm and healthy without the expense of turning up the heating, which many of us, whether we’re older, ill, single or with families, just can’t afford.
The programme and CDs were funded through a grant from the Winter Warmth Community Grants Scheme, with monies provided by the Department of Health’s Warm Homes, Healthy People Fund, managed by Leeds Community Foundation.
