With the new season underway, South Leeds Golf Club has a clear message: we’re still here and we’re open for members and non-members alike.
The closure of Middleton Park Golf Course has caused confusion for some people, but there were always two golf courses. South Leeds straddles the Ring Road and has its club house at the end of Gipsy Lane, beyond Cockburn School.
Nick is the golf pro, offering coaching for novices and experienced golfers alike. He explains:
“The great advantage of being a member is that you can pop in whenever you’ve an hour free, on a summer evening maybe, and play a few holes. You also get a good discount in the bar and the cafe.
“But everyone’s welcome to turn up and pay for a round.”
Asked why people should take up golf Nick replies: “It’s great exercise – a four mile walk, plus carrying your clubs and swinging your club to hit a ball. Plus there’s the social side.”
Cafe and function room
Debbie and Tanya have just taken over the catering and rebranded it as The Gipsy Rose Cafe. It’s now open Tuesday to Sunday 7am-5pm offering teas, snacks and hot meals.
“We are keen for this to become a vibrant social space that the whole community uses.
“The club are keen to see as many people as possible using the cafe and the function room. We are planning tea dances for the older residents, but we want to get the kids in to.
“Our first event is an Elvis tribute night on Saturday 7 May 2016. At £10 a ticket you can’t go wrong!”
On Friday and Saturday afternoons the Gipsy Rose Cafe offers a proper old fashioned afternoon tea at just £15 for two, please book in advance.
The cafe certainly makes a welcome stopping off point if you are walking up to Middleton Park from Beeston.
