Some of the biggest comic-based films ever made are being shown for FREE at Leeds Dock over this weekend (26-28 September 2014), courtesy of live outdoor film specialists Sneaky Experience.
Film fans of all ages are being treated to a massive, three day bonanza of free outdoor screenings, comprising of seven classics, including The Incredibles, Superman and The Dark Knight, based on the DC comic character Batman.
Attendees can expect a cinematic experience like no other with superhero characters from each film on hand to interact with the crowd, while audience members are positively encouraged to arrive in fancy dress.
In addition, there will be face painting activities, a photo-booth, street food stalls and a licensed bar, with retro superhero TV programmes screened between each film, including Batman & Robin, Spiderman and Wonder Woman.
The fun begins on Friday 26 September at 6.30pm, with a special screening of the cult classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where fans will have the opportunity to catch up on the adventures of Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo.
Saturday 27 September will commence with a 12pm screening of the 2004 American computer animated comedy superhero film, The Incredibles, followed by an opportunity to catch box office sensation, Superman, at 3pm. A day to remember will be crowned with a 7pm screening of X-Men: First Class, the fictional team of superheroes made famous by Marvel Comics.
The fun continues on Sunday 28 September at 12pm, with a special screening of Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda, starring a host of famous voices including Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Seth Rogan. Marvel’s The Avengers will follow this at 2.30pm, with a weekend of comic fuelled entertainment concluding at 6pm with the screening of the Batman masterpiece, The Dark Knight.
This latest movie-filled weekend is part of an ongoing programme of exciting events being staged at Leeds Dock, as site owners Allied London work to transform the area, previously known as Clarence Dock, into a vibrant, multi-purpose waterfront location.
Lucy Whalley, project co-ordinator for Allied London, said:
“With Thought Bubble, the UK’s biggest comic convention, descending on Leeds Dock in November, we wanted to give everyone a taste of the comic magic that has inspired some of the most popular films ever made.
“The scene is all set for an unforgettable weekend of superhero action, and if previous outdoor cinema events are anything to go by, we’re looking forward to welcoming hundreds of people to join in the fun.”
Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets and dress appropriately for the weather – events will go ahead come rain or shine. A free water taxi service will be in operation over the weekend from 10am to 6pm to transport film fans between Granary Wharf (behind the train station) and Leeds Dock.
As part of its work to transform Leeds Dock, Allied London recently completed the installation of approximately 60 metres of stepped astro-turf banking next to the waterfront area, serving as seating for hundreds of spectators during outdoor events.
Work is also well underway to create new public gardens along the main approach to the waterfront, offering a mixture of relaxation and play. In addition, improvements are also being made to the pedestrian route linking the site to the rest of the city.
In June, hoardings decorated by some of the UK’s top street artists were erected in front of buildings where Allied London is currently working to create some of the most exciting and desirable work and play space anywhere in the UK.
