Six young bands showcased their talents and latest material at the competition in front of an audience of over 85 young people and their families. The winning band was awarded with 20 hours of studio recording time at Leeds City Council’s South Leeds Youth Hub, supported by a technician and an opportunity to perform at this year’s Barnsley Music Festival and the Beeston Festival in Leeds.

The winning band was brotherly duo “The Keatings”. Jake (16) and Nick (15) who attend Bradford Grammar School, presented a mixture of light rock, folk and country with harmonies supported by acoustic and electric guitars. They will now undertake their demo recording in the Hub’s fully equipped recording studio and prepare to play at this summer’s two festivals.

The four hour event saw bands perform from areas including Garforth, Belle Isle, Roundhay and Bradford. Local young people who are supported by the Council’s Youth Service helped set up and run the event which included an alcohol-free cocktail bar and refreshments. The winners were chosen by a judging panel made up of local musicians: Guy Thomas from Wakefield band, Thomas Wilby Gang; Shane Joy from Ryder and David Pearsall from Barnsley Live Music Festival.

“The battle was a great opportunity for some up and coming young bands to perform in front of a live audience. I was very impressed with the talent and enthusiasm of the young musicians.

“The South Leeds Youth Hub is a fantastic facility for young people across all of south Leeds and well worth a visit.”
