Let’s start down in Stourton where, as usual there’s lots going on at Skelton Grange Environment Centre. They’re digging a new pond and looking for new volunteer officers to learn how to lead groups at the centre. Their wildlife sighting of the week was a deer swimming in the River Aire!
Our friends at South Leeds Community Radio also report a busy new year with lots of new volunteers making their first programmes this week including South Leeds Life’s very own Kenneth Ingram. With debate raging about locating a support service in Holbeck, local blogger John Cockburn has been looking into how prostitution is policed. on his blog What Can I Do About It he calls for West Yorkshire to fully adopt the Merseyside model and record crimes against sex workers as hate crimes. An interesting read.
If you want to know what your MP is up to, Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn blogs about his week over on his website. This week’s agenda includes housing, betting machines, health and social care and troubled families.
We’ve mentioned the People of Leeds Twitter account before. Each week a different person takes a turn at being Person of Leeds, but this week is different. For the account’s second anniversary the baton is being handed on daily and on Saturday it arrives in Beeston as local ‘Twit’ Ewan Mitchell becomes Person of Leeds once again.
A new Junior Reporters course is starting up at South Leeds Youth Hub from 4 February, run by our good friend John Baron. The five week course is for 12-16 year olds – we hope some of the students will write for South Leeds Life.
Hunslet St Mary’s Primary School report on their blog that they were selected to be Radio Aire’s School of the Week. Congratulations!
Beeston’s Park Fisheries, holders of a Yorkshire In Bloom award, have posted an intriguing comment: “Exciting times ahead, watch this space!”
And finally, the Hamara Centre is collecting shoes, clothes and duvets to help refugees in Syria. You can take them to the centre on Tempest Road in Beeston, the collection ends on 13 February.
