An aspirational new plan for the development of Beeston and Holbeck is being launched at a community event with fun activities for families.
Leeds Federated Housing Association (Leeds Fed) is launching its Local Offer for the area at Rowland Road Social Club on Tuesday 1 October, from 12pm to 4pm.
The event has been organised with partners: Groundwork Leeds, Salvation Army South Leeds Initiative and Leeds City Council. As part of the event, local children will create a huge painted mural for a bin store on Trentham Row to brighten up the area. Residents can make hanging baskets with winter pansies, enjoy refreshments including fresh apple juice made from a juice press and, visit a variety of stalls for useful advice about managing money, reducing energy bills and employment.
Leeds Fed’s Neighbourhood Officers for the area and Social Investment Team will be at the event to talk to the local community about the Local Offer and what it means for them.
The Local Offer has been developed after speaking with residents about how they would like to see their neighbourhood improved and what further support Leeds Fed could offer them.
Leeds Fed visited 200 residents in Beeston and Holbeck over 12 months to talk to them about their homes, their communities and their hopes and concerns for the future. These conversations have shaped the Local Offer, which sets out how the association intends to respond to the views of residents.
Catherine Nelson, Neighbourhood Initiatives Co-ordinator at Leeds Fed, said:
“Leeds Fed is committed to working with residents to help them to achieve their aspirations for their lives and local communities. The local offer lets residents know how Leeds Fed will work with them to achieve their goals.
“It is a different approach to neighbourhood planning which in the past has relied on questionnaires, and response rates were typically low.
“Now we have a programme of work that we know is truly shaped by our residents and that will have a genuine impact on their lives.”
The Local Offer includes commitments to:
Give advice and support to customers on money management, welfare reform and how to reduce their energy bills.- Tackle litter issues by working with Leeds City Council, local agencies and businesses.
- Support the development of activities for young people in the area.
- Provide apprenticeships opportunities and employment, skills and training support.
- Promote opportunities for people to buy their own home and shared ownership properties.
Residents are also invited to attend a Leeds Fed Tenants’ Federation meeting from 3.30pm to 5.30pm at the Rowland Road Social Club.
Local Offers will also soon be launched for Hunslet, Belle Isle and Middleton.
They have been developed as part of Leeds Fed’s aspiration to ‘Build Futures Together’
